What is Scouting?

Scouting provides an exciting and challenging environment for boys and girls to learn skills and responsibilities that can be difficult to find in modern life. Progressing through Cubs, Scouts, and Ventures, young people learn to work in teams, to plan, and to take responsibility for themselves and others. But most of all Scouting is fun! The photographs in the montage at the very top of this page are all of our own Scouts and leaders on outdoor activities. As they share games, adventures and challenges young people make lifelong friends, and learn how to work with them to complete whatever tasks are placed in front of them.

Who are the Leaders?

Scout leaders are volunteers who give their time to Scouting because they know how important it is for young people. Many leaders were themselves Scouts, and want to pass on something of what they got from Scouting. All new leaders must provide references and apply for Garda clearance, even if they are already known to the Scout Group.  Leaders must undergo training in all aspects of running Scout activities, including safety and first aid. While Scouting activities may sometimes look a little rough and ready, or even chaotic at times, there is a very strict set of rules that all leaders must keep to. Scouting Ireland's Code of Conduct is a very comprehensive document that all leaders must be familiar with, and must adhere to.

While our Scout leaders are prepared to give their time and energy to help your child grow and learn, we expect that you as parent will also contribute some time and energy. There are many ways that you can help. The first is to encourage and support your child's participation in Scouting, by ensuring that they take part in all activities and by attending yourself at parents' meetings.  We always need help to transport equipment to and from weekend activities, and we are in constant need of help to maintain our Scout Hall in Sunbury Gardens.

If you have any questions please contact the Group Leader, Barry Redmond at barry.redmond@dit.ie or ask any of the leaders.

Who has access to this website?

We are very conscious of the requirement for online safety for our young members, so most of this website is private and is only accessible by logging in. Login passwords are provided to each Scout, Venture Scout, Leader and parent in HQ Dartry Scout Group. This website is directly controlled by leaders in HQ Dartry, and private information on the website is not visible to anyone except approved logged-in visitors. Private information on the website is not given to anyone else.

Within the private areas of the website we allow young people to add and change some content. This is part of giving them some freedom and responsibility, but all activity on the website is monitored closely by the leaders. If there is something on the website that you think is inappropriate please contact us.

Can parents login?

Every parent of one of our young members can have a password for logging in to this website. Logging in allows access to various forms and documents, and lets you see the private areas used by our Cubs, Scouts and Ventures. It also gives you access to the photo albums of our activities. If you want a login password, please contact us.
