About Us

HQ Scout Group was founded in 1926 and was the first Group (then called a 'Unit') in Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (CBSI). In 2004 the two Scouting associations in Ireland, CBSI and SAI, merged to form Scouting Ireland.  HQ Group is the only group in Scouting Ireland that has no number, but that's a story for another day.

Our neckerchief is Old Gold, the same colour as the original neckerchief of the officers of CBSI. The Unit was founded by Father Ernest Farrell at University Church, St Stephen's Green in Dublin. With his brother Father Tom Farrell, Fr. Ernest also co-founded CBSI. Over the years HQ Scouts have used various premises in Charlemont St, Ranelagh, Pleasant St, and since the 1970s we have had our own Scout den in Sunbury Gardens in Dartry.

A number of people who were members of the Group in the 1930s and the 1940s are still in regular contact with us. Recently we renewed contact with someone who first joined the Group in 1926, the year it was founded! A short history of H.Q. Scout Group was written in 1992 by Sean O'Connor. Sadly, Sean died in 1998 after serving as a leader with us for close to 40 years. Among his large collection of papers we found the logbook from the very first meeting of the Scout Troop in 1927.
